North Carolina Disability Determination Services (DDS)
adjudicates the claims of persons filing for disability benefits with the Social
Security Administration. Usually the DDS tries to obtain evidence from the patient's
own treating sources first. If that evidence is unavailable or insufficient to make a
determination, DDS will arrange for a consultative examination (CE) in order to obtain
the additional information needed. In those instances, DDS authorizes community
physicians, psychologists and other health professionals to perform these examinations.
All consultative examination sources must be currently licensed in the state and have the training and
experience to perform the type of examination or test SSA requires.
